Meals on Wheels Volunteer Turns 90 Years Young

12/21/2011

Meals on Wheels of Lehigh County volunteers, staff and friends celebrated the 90th birthday of one of the Agency’s long-term volunteers during a surprise party on December 16th.

Cynthia Caddoo of Wescosville has been delivering meals since January of 1988. She has contributed over 2,240 hours of volunteer service, logged over 18,266 miles and delivered about 30,000 meals. Betty and her partner, 81-year old Betty McTish, deliver meals every Friday on Meals on Wheels of Lehigh County's longest delivery route--ranging from 50 to 60 miles.

Cynthia was born in Florida in 1921. She grew up during the Great Depression and helped her family through those difficult times. Cynthia served her country as a WAVE during World War II. She worked as an air traffic controller at the Atlanta Naval Air Station for two and a half years.

Cynthia and her husband moved to the Lehigh Valley in the mid-1960’s. Her husband worked at Air Products and Cynthia dedicated herself to raising her three sons and contributed time to making their community a better place.

Cynthia volunteers for Meals on Wheels but also served the Lehigh Valley through service to other organizations including the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired and the now disbanded Dorneyville Lioness’s Club.

Citations from Senator Pat Brown, Representative Doug Reichley and Lehigh County Executive Don Cunningham were presented to Cynthia who was surrounded by her fellow Meals on Wheels volunteers at the celebration. Cynthia’s motto is: "Get up and get going!" She is a truly remarkable woman who defies stereotypes and redefines the concept of aging for everyone who knows her.
